Bishop Felipe J. Estévez will formally recognize 16 new lay ministers in a closing ceremony of the Ministry Formation Program on Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. The ceremony is open to the public.

In 1990, Bishop John J. Snyder established a committee to study the development of a formation program for lay ministers in the Diocese of St. Augustine. The first participants were admitted to the Ministry Formation Program (MFP) in the fall of 1992. The program’s first coordinator was appointed in July 1996.

The Ministry Formation Program shares in the ministry of leadership and service to the people and parishes in the diocese through a comprehensive program of spiritual, academic and pastoral formation for lay leaders. It provides a three-year comprehensive program of study: the first two years focusing on the academic subjects of Scripture, Catholic Tradition, Catholic Beliefs, Morality, Sacraments and Liturgy; the third year combining Theological Reflection with a Supervised Practicum Project.

The Ministry Formation Program is accredited by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation. The program was granted Reaffirmation of Accreditation in December 2009. This accreditation body is no longer in existence, but the MFP maintains its status until 2016.

“I give thanks for so many lay leaders who make our parishes alive and our society more just and peaceful. We owe them an opportunity to grow in competence and knowledge in their service,” said Bishop Felipe J. Estévez of the Diocese of St. Augustine.  “As St. Paul said, we are to ‘equip the holy ones for the work of ministry for building up the body of Christ.” (Eph 4:7)
