Father Robert Hater is Keynote Speaker for Catechetical Ministry Day

Finding God in the Stories of Our Lives: How Our Stories Evangelize Others, is the theme of the 19th annual Catechetical Ministry Day on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., at Bishop John Snyder High School in Jacksonville.

“This diocesan event has grown from being a formation day for catechists to a day that offers something for every parish and school ministry and minister,” said Erin McGeever, director of Christian Formation for the diocese.

This year’s theme is taken from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s recommendation for Catechetical Sunday, “Do This in Memory of Me.” The keynote presentation as well as the 14 workshops offered will focus on the sacred liturgy and the sacraments. The workshops are broken down into several categories: adult faith formation, catechist certification, classroom skills, family ministry, liturgical skills and youth.

Father Robert Hater, this year’s keynote speaker, is a veteran to both religious education and evangelization. He is a priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, professor of theology at the Athenaeum of Ohio, professor emeritus at the University of Dayton and author of more than 20 books. Many of his books and the focus of his 50 years of ministry have been in the area of evangelization and catechesis. His book, When a Catholic Marries a Non-Catholic, won a Catholic Press award in 2007. His recent publications include: Catholic Evangelization: The Heart of MinistryThe Catholic Parish: Home for a Changing WorldTell me a Story: The Role of Narrative in the Faith Life of Catholics and the Journeys of Discovery: Transitions, Rites of Passage and the Sacramental Life of Faith

The last two books will be presented in Father Hater’s keynote presentation and in his breakout session at the Catechetical Ministry Day. Other workshop titles include: New Reflections: Eucharistic Theology (a study of Karl Rahner), How Church Art and Architecture Enhance Our WorshipSocial Media and Praying with YouthTeaching the MassStorytelling and the Eucharist and the Introduction to Praying the Liturgy of the Hours.
