Miami Scholar Provides Workshops on Spirituality and Prayer in May

Dr. Guillermina Damas, a member of the Teresian Association, an international organization of the faithful founded by St. Pedro Poveda, will be conducting several workshops in English and Spanish throughout the Diocese of St. Augustine in May.

Dr. Damas, will speak on the spirituality of St. Teresa of Avila and on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation or letter addressed to the whole church, The Joy of the Gospel.

A mystic and first woman to be proclaimed a Doctor of the Church, St. Teresa has been called a “teacher of prayer.” Prayer is at the heart of Teresa of Avila’s life and teachings. For her, prayer is life; an intimate sharing between friends; a journey within that transforms us. Out of this experience of friendship emerges a deep commitment to Christ in the world and the church. All presentations are free and open to the public.

Friday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to noon
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jacksonville

Sunday, May 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. (Spanish)
Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Jacksonville

“The Joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew.” (EG 1) As Christians, we are invited to a renewed encounter with Christ and to share his light and joy in our world today.

Dr. Damas completed her academic work in Europe and in the United States. She has spent most of her adult life in Miami where she has worked at two Catholic high schools and is a longtime faculty member of Miami Dade College. Very active in the church, she has given numerous talks and seminars to different groups and has worked in youth ministry, campus ministry, the RCIA and lay ministry.
