Diocese Provides Leader Training for Local Youth

By Erin McGeever

The Office of Youth and Young Ministry for the Diocese of St. Augustine is hosting the YouthLeader Program this summer at Marywood Retreat & Conference Center in St. Johns.

YouthLeader is a training program for youth who will be high school sophomores and juniors this fall and who have displayed leadership capabilities. The program is one of several training programs offered by the Center for Ministry Development (CMD).

The Center for Ministry Development was founded in 1978 to provide training for youth, youth leaders, young adults and clergy. Training is offered in the areas of leadership, service, campus ministry and family formation. CMD also offers programming to be used in parishes, schools and other institutions. To learn more about what CMD has to offer, please visit their website at

The YouthLeader Program has one clear focus:  training youth for leadership within their parish, school and community. The weeklong program has three main categories of training:

• A leader understands the importance of living a virtuous life
• A leader is proactive in planning and development as opposed to reactive.

• YouthLeader will challenge the participants to explore the qualities of Jesus as a leadership model.
• Participants will explore their own God-given talents as a resource for their schools and parishes.
• Youth participants will explore their own call to vocation and development a personal mission statement.

Leadership Skills to be gained:
• Communication Skills
• Group Facilitation Skills
• Win-Win negotiation Skills
• Planning and Executing Skills

This five-day leadership training program is July 23-27. Youth or campus ministers can register their youth for the program through the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. The training is residential and parishes/schools work with their own team to develop a core team for their location. The skills gained during YouthLeader have made a difference on our high school and parish campuses.

Registration has already occurred in the spring, but space is still available for interested groups. Please contact Erin McGeever at (904) 262-3200, ext. 118 or for more information.
