Saturday after Ash Wednesday

This past week we were stunned by the announcement of Pope Benedict XVI renouncing his position as Pope and Bishop of Rome. I must admit that at first the news hit me like a ton of bricks.  I have loved the wisdom and love with which His Holiness has gently taught and guided the church and I don’t think I am ready for him to retire!  However, after bringing the feelings I had to prayer I came to the realization that this is a gift to the Church.  Pope Benedict has such a great love for the Church and for the office of Pope that as he approaches his 86th birthday and recognizing his own limitations due to health and age, he realizes that the Church and the World need more than he is able to give.  He sees how quickly things move and that the Pope must keep up and be on the move constantly. This act of humility and wisdom is what I believe makes Pope Benedict XVI a truly great Pope. My friends, I invite you to pray for him as he enters into a life of prayer & reflection! I have no doubt that he will continue to teach us through his writings! Pray also for the guidance of the Holy Spirit that the Lord may inspire the Cardinal Electors to give to the Church the Holy Father we need!
