Second Sunday of Advent

A voice of one crying out in the desert:

“Prepare the way of the Lord,

make straight his paths.

Every valley shall be filled

and every mountain and hill shall be made low.

The winding roads shall be made straight,

and the rough ways made smooth,

and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

Lk 3:6

This quote that St. Luke uses from the prophet Isaiah really hits at the heart of this Lenten journey.  We must prepare the way of the Lord so that he may enter into our hearts, but we must also prepare the way of the Lord in the world as well.  So often we hear in society that our faith is a “private” matter.  The reality is that if we are truly living our faith then there is nothing more public, because our faith will inform our decisions, be evidenced by our actions, and bear fruit in the world.  As the quote attributed to St. Francis of Assisi says, “Preach the Gospel always, and when necessary, use words!”  Let us endeavor during this Advent to prepare the way of the Lord so that he may enter into our hearts and our world to enlighten both with his love!
