Fifth Sunday of Easter

“Behold, I make all things new.”

This last line from today’s second reading from Revelation goes right to the core of this Easter Season. The great Paschal Mystery we celebrate is about renewal from death to newness of life! Mel Gibson in his movie “The Passion” took this quote from Revelation and inserted it into the passion narrative as our Blessed Mother encounters Jesus after he had fallen he turns to her and says “Behold, mother, I make all things new.” Indeed, the power at work in this renewal is the love of Christ, the love we hear our Lord commanding his disciples to exercise in today’s Gospel. True love is life giving and is a constant source of renewal and strength. True love has very little to do with warm fuzzies that feel, but has the other as its focus; a desire to give oneself for the other and to sacrifice for the other. It is this love that we should have for our Lord and for the other we encounter in our daily lives. May the Lord help us to increase in true love, a love that he exemplified in his passion, death and resurrection!
