Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

“At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people.”
Dn 12:1

This quote from the book of the prophet Daniel speaks to us of St. Michael the Archangel.  Most of us remember the prayer to St. Michael:

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen..

Pope St. Leo XII wrote this powerful prayer to the great defender and patron of the church.  He recognized through a vision that not only was God powerfully at work in the world, but that so was evil. He saw in a vision St. Michael casting the evil one down as the great warrior of heaven and our great defender. The prayer to St. Michel has fallen out of use for the vast majority, but I believe that it is a prayer that is great need today. When we are struggling with temptation, when we feel overwhelmed we should call upon our great warrior and patron to stir to our defense.  He, as we hear in our first reading is our “guardian”.  Take this prayer with you as you go home today and pray it daily or when a great struggle arises in you life. Trust that the Lord will send his warrior / messenger to your aid!
